Governor Sisolak has called for across the board cuts of every state agency in Nevada. For our communities--already suffering from underfunded schools, lack of affordable housing, and diminishing access to health care--these cuts will be devastating.
COVID-19 has brought on an unprecedented public health crisis. Businesses have closed their doors, even the Las Vegas Strip has gone dark. A quarter million Nevadans have filed for unemployment, with many more to follow. Our state’s revenue is drying up.
But you know who is doing great? The mining industry.
Nevada is the world’s 5th largest producer of gold. And while markets are tanking, the value of gold has increased or remained steady since March.
Despite making trillions of dollars from Nevada’s minerals, the mining industry only pays a small portion of taxes to the state. In fact, industries like car rentals and tobacco pay more in taxes, while generating a lot less revenue. How does mining get away with it?
In this time of crisis shared sacrifice is essential. The associated costs of this pandemic can not and will not fall solely on the shoulders of working class people, or Nevadans who depend on public services and social safety programs. Since Nevada’s founding the mining industry has taken advantage of our “business friendly” state at a cost of underfunded schools, lack of mental health care, and more. In this moment, is it more urgent than ever that mining acts as a responsible part of our communities.
That is why PLAN is asking YOU to join us in demanding that we use a special legislative session to cut the sweetheart tax deductions mining takes, and not just cut the services that we rely on! In unprecedented times, we need unprecedented action, and that means for the first time ever, standing up to the mining industry.
TELL GOVERNOR SISOLAK IT'S TIME TO TAX THE MINES
