We are slowly creeping closer to the rumored special legislative session expected to be called in November. This special session’s agenda is intended to pass the film tax credit and Lombardo’s crime bill, prioritizing corporations and profits over people.
Each of these bills failed to pass the regular session but are supposed to come back, because our elected officials can’t seem to prioritize the needs of our families being created every day by greedy corporations and the Trump administration. The film tax credit would give movie studios our tax dollars over the next ten years. The crime bill will increase incarceration with regressive, outdated tough-on-crime policies that protect merchandise, not people. The film tax credit and crime bill are not urgent nor a priority.
Our community is losing healthcare and food assistance programs due to the federal budget being in an emergency state. Our families have real needs that demand the same urgency that is being given to corporations. Nevada should be backfilling these federal cuts and establishing programs to make sure Nevadans aren’t going hungry.
Help us tell your legislators to prioritize people over profits and NOT support these corporate giveaways!
About the Film Tax Credit:
The film studio tax credit has been rumored for a few legislative sessions with the aim to attract movie corporations like Sony and Warner Brothers by giving away billions in tax credits over the next few years. The film tax credit is expected to cost Nevadans $1.65 billion, but only recover $755 million.
About the Crime Bill:
Lombardo’s crime bill was moved forward extremely last minute during the session earlier in the year. The bill had multiple parts that included lowering the threshold for petty theft, outdated three strike laws, and the dissolution of diversionary court programs. The crime bill would have undone policies from a 2019 law that has helped decrease recidivism and decreased crime in Nevada.
